The Blues Brothers
|
|
1977: The Blues Brothers, the original million-dollar gag, are initially formed by comedians Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi to get the crowd in a party mood before the tapings of Saturday Night Live, but the act moves into the body of the show, and Jake and Elwood Blues mania ensues. They surround themselves with the best musicians in the business, including guitarist Steve Cropper and bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn, who had played on some of the original versions of the songs they covered, including Sam & Dave's Hold On I'm Coming and Soul Man. Their first album BRIEFCASE FULL OF BLUES is recorded live in September 1978, and the record goes on to sell well over a million copies in North America, leading to the biographical film and the soundtrack THE BLUES BROTHERS, co-starring Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Ray Charles, Cab Calloway and John Candy. |
